Respecting Identity: A Thoughtful Approach to Ethnic Nose Surgery

Asian rhinoplasty requires a unique blend of surgical precision, cultural understanding, and artistic restraint. At Cheng Plastic Surgery in San Mateo, voted Best Plastic Surgeons in the Bay Area by the readers of the Mercury News, we offer specialized Asian rhinoplasty that respects your ethnic identity while enhancing facial balance and natural beauty.

Led by Drs. Jacqueline and Elbert Cheng—siblings, facial plastic surgery experts, and surgeons of Asian heritage—our team deeply understands the anatomical nuances and aesthetic goals unique to Asian noses. With every procedure, we focus on preserving your identity, enhancing proportion, and delivering results that look natural, not surgically altered. Dr. Jacqueline Cheng has trained under some of the world’s top rhinoplasty surgeons and has dedicated over 25 years of surgical expertise to perfecting the art of rhinoplasty.

What Makes Asian Rhinoplasty Different?

The anatomical structure of an Asian nose differs significantly from that of a Caucasian nose. Common traits include a lower nasal bridge, weaker tip cartilage, thicker skin, and wider nostrils.

These characteristics require a tailored surgical approach, advanced techniques, and an appreciation for facial harmony, not homogenization.

At Cheng Plastic Surgery, we do not apply a one-size-fits-all Western aesthetic to Asian features. Instead, we honor your heritage while enhancing what makes your features unique.

What Can Asian Rhinoplasty Improve?

Enhanced Nasal Tip

Refines a low or rounded nasal tip for improved projection and definition.

Elevated Nasal Bridge

Builds height in a flatter bridge using autologous cartilage or implants for a refined, elegant profile.

Nostril Narrowing

Reduces nostril width for improved proportion with other facial features.

Balanced Length and Shape

Lengthens or subtly enlarges the nose to achieve harmony with the cheeks, lips, and eyes, without overcorrection.

Are You a Candidate for Asian Rhinoplasty?

You may be a good candidate if you:

  • Are of East Asian, Southeast Asian, or South Asian descent
  • Are dissatisfied with the shape, height, or width of your nose
  • Desire natural, harmonious refinement—not a Westernized nose
  • Are in good health and a non-smoker
  • Have realistic expectations and a positive outlook

Your procedure will be carefully tailored to reflect both your aesthetic goals and ethnic identity.

Step 1: In-depth Consultation

We’ll take the time to understand your vision and goals. Using advanced imaging, we help you visualize potential results and ensure you feel confident in your surgical plan.

Step 2: Surgery Day

  • Performed in our private, fully accredited surgical suite in San Mateo
  • General anesthesia or IV sedation ensures a pain-free, restful experience
  • Incisions are discreet, often placed inside the nostrils or under the base of the nose (open approach)

Depending on your anatomy and desired outcome, we may use:

  • Cartilage grafts (from your septum, ear, or rib)
  • Silicone or Gore-Tex implants (for bridge elevation, when appropriate)
  • Alar base reduction (to refine nostril width)

Please note: Asian rhinoplasty is performed exclusively at our Saratoga surgical center, a fully accredited facility designed to support precision, safety, and exceptional outcomes for every patient.

Recovery from Asian Rhinoplasty

Healing from Asian rhinoplasty is often smoother than most expect. What to expect:

  • Mild swelling and bruising peak within the first week
  • Sutures and splints removed in 7–10 days
  • Return to work and public life in 10–14 days
  • Avoid strenuous activity for 3–4 weeks
  • Final nasal shape refines over 12 months as swelling subsides

You’ll need to protect your nose from sun exposure and avoid impact or pressure. Sleeping with your head elevated will reduce swelling. Pain is typically minimal and managed with medication.
