Wrinkles aren’t the only thing that tends to plague us over time. In fact, many adults are just as distressed about the formation of a double chin as they are about facial creases. The good news is that there are ways to curb that submental fat that tends to develop underneath the jawline. At the Center for Facial and Body Rejuvenation, we offer a variety of treatment options for a double chin, depending on the amount of correction you need and your precise aesthetic goals.
If you are dealing with mild submental fat accompanied by some skin laxity, Ultherapy might be an optimal choice for you. This nonsurgical procedure is specifically designed to lift and tighten skin using targeted ultrasound energy to heat the underlying dermal layers. The ultrasound energy triggers the body’s production of collagen and elastin, which in turn creates skin that is tighter and firmer.
To help you manage any potential discomfort during the treatment, we use a topical numbing solution before your procedure. You will be able to return to your regular activities right away and any redness or swelling following treatment should subside within a day or two. Results of Ultherapy are long-lasting but not permanent, so you will need to repeat the treatment to maintain your results.
When the primary problem is submental fat rather than loose skin, Kybella® might provide you with better results. This solution contains deoxycholic acid, a substance in the body that aids in the absorption of fat. Injections of deoxycholic acid underneath the chin destroy fat cells in the area so the body can naturally flush them out. Over time, the area underneath the chin becomes sleeker and more defined. Kybella® does require multiple treatments for optimal results.
Kybella® injections are usually performed after we numb the treatment area. A grid pattern is also drawn underneath the chin to show where the injections will be administered. Injections take just a few minutes to complete, and you can head back to work as soon as you leave our office. Any swelling and discomfort after treatment can be managed with ice packs and over-the-counter pain medication.
This treatment for a double chin may be necessary if you have a substantial amount of submental fat and loose skin to address. The surgical procedure excises extra skin from the neck to create a smoother surface and may include liposuction to eliminate those isolated fat deposits. In addition to offering dramatic results, the outcome of a neck lift will last many years before any additional treatment is required.
Most neck lift procedures performed at the Center for Facial and Body Rejuvenation are done under local anesthesia. Your incisions will be placed under the chin in a natural crease to minimize visible scarring. Through the incisions, extra skin and tissue will be removed to sculpt a more defined jawline and a smoother transition from the chin to the chest. You should be back to most of your regular schedule within one or two weeks after your neck lift.
