Our San Jose SmartLipo® treatment is a minimally invasive liposuction method that sculpts the body using laser technology to remove excess fat. At Cheng Plastic Surgery we use SmartLipo TriPlex®. Called “TriPlex” because it uses a triple wavelength form of laser technology, this system offers superior body contouring results.

Are There Benefits to SmartLipo That Regular Liposuction Does Not Offer?

Also called laser lipolysis, SmartLipo uses medical-grade lasers with a light beam powerful enough to rupture fat cells and then melt the fat without traumatizing nearby blood vessels, nerves, and other soft tissues. Unlike traditional liposuction, SmartLipo can also tighten the skin by strengthening the connection between the underlying muscle and the skin. It also further tightens the skin gradually by promoting the body’s natural production of collagen.

Can SmartLipo be Used For Weight Loss?

SmartLipo is not a substitute for weight loss, but it is a good option for people with localized pockets of fat that have not resolved from diet and exercise. It can be used on most any area of the body, including the abdomen, buttocks, thighs, love handles, knees, flanks, upper arms, and back. Precision treatments (part of the SmartLipo Triplex system) can treat the chin, jowls, and neck as well.

What is the SmartLipo Triplex System and Why is it Superior to Other Systems?

Our Palo Alto SmartLipo Triplex system offers three different and unique wavelengths of laser beams. These three wavelengths can be used together in a single beam, separately, or customized and blended. These options, combined with specific, built-in safety technology enable a trained user to provide the exact treatment needed for each patient.

What is the SmartLipo Procedure?

A local anesthetic is administered before your treatment, although Dr. Elbert and Dr. Jacqueline Cheng do recommend IV Sedation with an anesthesiologist for the utmost comfort. Some procedures can be done under local anesthesia alone, depending upon the patient. The SmartLipo procedure itself takes one to three hours depending upon the number of areas you wish to treat. Tiny incisions are made in the treatment areas, and a small cannula or tube that is no longer than a pen tip is inserted into the incisions one by one.

The laser energy reaches the fat cells through the cannula, and after the laser liquefies the fat with thermal energy, it is suctioned out of the body. Many of the septae (plural for septum, from the Latin, meaning fence or enclosure), which are fibrous cords that attach skin to muscle and cause cellulite, are also released, for even greater contouring.

How Do You Ensure the Optimal Outcome?

There are several ways that we, as practitioners, and the SmartLipo system itself work to ensure the safety of our patients and the optimal outcome.

Between the pressure of the furniture and the forces exerted by gravity, a body that is seated or lying down has quite a different shape than a body that is standing. Because of this, on the “human side,” we will have you stand before the procedure is done and perform a visual inspection to make sure that no areas of fat were missed.

What is the Recovery From SmartLipo?

Most of our patients return to work in less than a week and resume all normal activities in two weeks. You should refrain from strenuous exercise for about a month, however.

Some bruising, swelling, bleeding, and pain are to be expected immediately following the procedure, but these symptoms are less severe than those experienced after traditional liposuction. You will wear a compression garment over the treated areas for a period of time and, if necessary, you can take pain medication as you heal.

Although incisions are very small, sutures will occasionally be needed to ensure the best healing. Because of this, you can expect a slight amount of hyperpigmentation around the incisions that will slowly fade with time. Incisions will heal within 2 - 4 weeks, and the marks will disappear during the months following the procedure.

What Results Can I Expect?

The results are visible immediately for some patients, while others may experience swelling for a longer period of time that delays the visibility of the outcome. The firming and tightening of the treated areas will continue for as long as six months.

The fat cells that have been removed do not come back, and your results last for the long term. This is not to say that if your weight fluctuates a great deal, the remaining cells will swell with stored fat, but less will be appearing on the area treated.

Contraindications of SmartLipo

Circumstances vary greatly from patient to patient. Some specific circumstances that indicate a patient should not undergo laser liposuction in San Jose include:

If the patient is expecting a flat tummy, he or she may benefit more from an abdominoplasty than SmartLipo. Of course this depends upon a myriad of factors that will be determined during your initial consultation.

Because SmartLipo is not a weight loss procedure, patients with extreme obesity or a high BMI are not candidates. SmartLipo patients should be within 10-15 pounds of their goal weight to undergo the procedure.

How do medical lasers work?

A laser uses precisely focused, high-intensity light to treat or remove tissues. Medical laser systems produce a variety of different wavelengths, depending on what they are being used for. For example, the wavelength for laser eye surgery is quite different than the wavelength for SmartLipo. Different lasers have different ranges of wavelengths they will produce. Due to the different wavelengths, they have different colored beams. A red laser could actually reach the moon from Earth. Practice Policy Update Regarding COVID-19

Monday, January 4, 2021:

We are open!

We cannot wait to see all of our amazing patients in our office! We are currently working with a more limited schedule than before, so please be patient as we navigate through this, together.

There are a few key changes we’ve made to our appointment protocol to ensure we are maintaining social distancing and following strict COVID-19 health and safety protocols - for you AND for us.

  1. Call our office from your car once you’ve arrived for your appointment. A staff member will come out to greet you, take your temperature and conduct a short COVID-19 health screening to make sure you are in good health prior to entering the building. Our doors will remain locked during normal business hours to ensure only those who have been screened can enter.
  2. Please arrive at your appointment wearing a mask or protective face covering. We will not be able to bring you inside the office without one.
  3. We will not have more than one patient in the lobby at a time.
  4. You will be greeted by Dr. Elbert or Dr. Jacqueline wearing their Personal Protective Equipment deemed necessary by your specific treatment. (N95 mask, gloves, face shield or protective eyewear, etc.) We ask that you leave your mask on during the procedure, and only take it off if necessary to complete the treatment.
  5. All necessary transactions will be done in the room your treatment is being performed. This will avoid unnecessary back ups in the lobby.
  6. You will then be walked out through the back door of the office. This is the best way to keep all staff and patients socially distanced while maintaining one steady flow of traffic throughout the building.

And of course, all rooms will be heavily disinfected immediately after you leave just as we have always done prior to the pandemic. Each room is equipped with an air filter as an added safety measure. We will place a major focus on high-contact areas such as chairs, doorknobs, counter tops, mirrors and more.

We are still continuing to conduct Virtual Consultations if you prefer a quicker and no-contact experience.

Virtual Consultation

For the safety of our patients and staff, we ask that you reschedule your appointment and do not enter our office with any of the following conditions:

  1. You have tested positive for COVID-19 in the last 14 days.
  2. You have been in close contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19 in the last 14 days.
  3. You traveled more than 150 miles or have been in close contact with someone who has traveled in the last 10 days.
  4. You are experiencing any of the following symptoms:
    • fever or chills
    • cough
    • shortness of breath
    • fatigue
    • muscle or body aches
    • headaches
    • sore throat
    • loss of taste or smell
    • nausea, diarrhea, or vomiting

Concerned about getting the Moderna vaccine after having recently received filler treatment? In some studies, it has been observed that a small percentage of the vaccinated groups experienced localized inflammation (swelling) after receiving the Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine. In said cases, all studied reactions were temporary immune responses. It has been suggested that patients refrain from getting filler two weeks before and after the vaccine. If you have any questions, please feel free to call our office!

Thank you for your continued support and we can't wait to see you again!

Kindest Regards,,

Dr. Elbert, Dr. Jacqueline and staff at Cheng Plastic Surgery
