Some people are disheartened by the effects of aging on their face, but they are still reluctant to get a facelift. They often feel that the results are unpredictable, and they could end up looking unnatural or too tight. This is why we use the trusted Modified-SMAS facelift technique. It tightens the underlying muscles, not just the overlying skin, so that the facelift looks natural and not “wind-blown.” This method also provides longer-lasting facelift results, is more predictable, and needs less recovery time.
At the Center for Facial and Body Rejuvenation, our board-certified Saratoga facelift surgeons will spend time with you to understand your esthetic goals, and they will examine you carefully to determine the best surgical plan. While they use the Modified-SMAS technique, there are multiple facelift techniques, and they approach every facelift individually.
We have performed hundreds to thousands of successful facelifts for patients in the greater San Francisco Bay area. With two board-certified facial plastic surgeons in our office, you have the option to receive a second opinion within the same office.
It is important for patients to understand that a facelift only rejuvenates the face from the cheeks down. It is primarily used to correct the signs of aging in the cheek and jowl area (jawline). A neck lift extends this correction downward, while a forehead lift and/or eyelid lift helps the upper portion of the face look more youthful. For this reason, some patients decide to have a neck lift, cheek augmentation, rhinoplasty (nose surgery), a forehead lift, or eyelid surgery at the same time as their facelift for a more comprehensive rejuvenation of the face.
Also, while a facelift tightens the lower portion of the face, it does not alter fine lines and wrinkles or sun damage, such as hyperpigmentation, on the skin. For these conditions, many of our patients opt for a non-surgical procedure to complete their more youthful transformation after healing from their facelift. These treatments include Fraxel Laser Resurfacing, Microneedling with Platelet Rich Plasma, Intense Pulsed Light (IPL), Dermabrasion, Chemical Peels, Botox®, Fat Transfer, or Dermal Fillers such as Juvéderm®, Voluma, Restylane®, or Sculptra®.
Your Facelift Procedure
Facelift can be performed under local or general anesthesia. During the procedure, the incisions are delicately hidden in the hairline, inside the ear, and under the chin. With a properly performed surgery and normal healing, the incisions should be imperceptible to all but your closest friends and family.
Excess skin and fatty tissue are removed, and the underlying muscles are tightened and reshaped, if necessary. The skin is then redraped for a more youthful look.
You will be able to go home within a few hours of your surgery, and must be driven home and supervised for 24 hours by a competent adult.
There will be some bruising, numbness, tightness, and discomfort for up to ten days. While swelling will take a little bit longer to fully resolve, the swelling will not be as noticeable after a short time. You can take pain medication, and we recommend sleeping upright for a few nights to keep the swelling to a minimum.
Most people take about one to two weeks off from work after a facelift, and sports/exercise should be avoided for several weeks.
We will send you home with a bandage around your jawline. In some cases, drains may be necessary to capture fluid as you heal. These drains are placed under the skin and removed the next morning. Once the drains are removed, you are free to begin showering.
We will also provide products use during the immediate recovery period to promote healing and improve the appearance of post-surgical scars.
Sutures are removed in about a week, and you can begin wearing makeup 10 days after surgery. We will also see you for post-operative examinations to make sure that you are healing well.
